If you’re looking to treat yourself and take care of your skin, but bummed we can’t go out this post is for you. I’m going to outline how to give yourself a professional-level facial treatment at home.
Show your skin some love with a facial treatment. A facial is a great way to hydrate your skin or address any skin care concerns you may have.
To start, let’s talk about if you can achieve the same level of skin care treatment at home in a DIY facial as opposed to going to a spa for a professional treatment.
In short, yes you can! A facial treatment really isn’t that hard, especially if you have the right products.
However, there are a few differences to consider. It may not be as relaxing to apply the product yourself, as opposed to having an esthetician do all the work for you.
To combat this, you can have a self care day with friends and give each other facial treatments.
Another key difference between an at home facial and a professional facial is that typically in a professional facial treatment, the esthetician will perform extractions where he or she will remove what’s built up in your pores.
I do not recommend performing this yourself, because if you aren’t skilled and trained properly, you can damage your skin.
Leave the extractions to the professionals!
Before you get started with the facial treatment, set up a calming environment to relax in just as it would feel in a professional spa. Light some candles, dim the lights, and put on some calming music.
Be sure to pull your hair back using a clip or a headband so your hair won’t get caught in the products you are about to apply.
Now you’re ready to jump into your facial treatment at home.
1. Remove makeup and cleanse your skin
The first step of your DIY facial is to remove any makeup from your face and cleanse it. This step is one of the most essential steps because it provides a fresh, clean base to apply the rest of the skin care products to.
Overall, it’s best to cleanse twice to ensure your face is a clean slate. If you aren’t wearing makeup, just use a gentle cleanser and skip the makeup remover. Then use a regular cleanser.
Pat your face dry with a towel and move on to the next step.
2. Exfoliate
The next step is to exfoliate your skin. This step is important to scrub away the dry and dead skin that may prevent your face from absorbing the products you are going to apply afterwards.
Typically, in a professional facial at a spa, the esthetician would use a steamer during this step. If you have a steamer at home you can use that, or for a DIY addition boil some water or run a hot shower and apply the exfoliant over the steam.
Again, pat your face dry with a towel and move on to the next step.
3. Apply a face mask
Next, apply your favorite face mask. This step can be customized depending on what your favorite face mask is or what kind of skin care issues you are looking to target.
Dry skin? Try using this face mask with oatmeal that will be healing and hydrating.
Skin looking dull? Use this brightening mask to hydrate and brighten your complexion.
Read the face mask container to find out how long to leave your mask on. Set a timer on your phone and do something relaxing while you wait.
I like to apply some lotion to my hands or meditate during this time period.
Wash off the face mask when your timer goes off, then pat your face dry.
4. Tone
The next step is to use a toner. Apply the toner using a cotton round and gently wipe your face. You’ll see all of the dirt and remnants on the cotton round.
This step ensures that your remove anything from your face that would go into your pores.
5. Serum
This step is optional, but it can be a really fun addition that leads to results.
Serums usually contain vitamins and antioxidants that will benefit your skin. They can improve skin hydration and reduce redness and inflammation.
6. Eye cream
Next, apply your favorite eye cream. Apply under the eye and above where the bone is.
Eye cream is an important step to strengthen the skin under your eyes. Eye cream will help reduce dark circles, prevent wrinkles, and brighten skin.
7. Moisturize
You are now ready to apply your moisturizer. I like this one because it is really hydrating.
Moisturizing your skin will help reduce dryness and soothe skin.
8. Lip treatment
The last step is to apply a lip treatment. If you have dry or flaky lips, use a lip scrub to exfoliate your lips.
A lip scrub will help prepare your lips to absorb moisture of a lip balm.
Then, apply a lip balm to hydrate your lips. Doing this last, as opposed to before your face moisturizer, will help it stay in place.
That’s how to give yourself a professional facial treatment at home.
While it’s typically recommended to get a professional facial about every 3-4 weeks, you can use a lot of these products in your daily skin care routine so they are a great investment!
Feel free to do this on your own or have a self care day with your friends.
