And with these 7 steps, you will not only get a super organized closet, but you’ll keep it organized, too.

1. Clean it out

This first step is an essential step when you organize your closet because it will get rid of unnecessary clutter and make it easy to organize everything.

Take everything out of your closet for a blank slate. Get some bags or containers to put the clothes you are getting rid of into.

Go through all of your clothes and shoes and take out anything that shows significant wear and tear. This is an easy first criteria to quickly take out clothes you don’t want anymore.

Then, go through and take out anything that doesn’t fit anymore or that you don’t wear anymore. A good threshold for determining if you should get rid of something is if you haven’t worn it in the last year.

If you’re feeling indecisive, you can always keep it and decide later…BUT if you feel indecisive about an item it probably means you don’t really love it.

Anything that is still in good condition, put into a container to either donate to charity or sell through consignment such as Plato’s Closet or Poshmark. Anything that is too worn out, put in a throw away bin.

2. Prioritize clothes

Next, you are going to add your clothes back into your closet. If you have a smaller closet or a lot of clothes, only put back clothes that are in season, and put the rest into a labeled bin that you can store on a shelf.

For example, in summer put back in all of your short-sleeved tops, shorts, etc. and put those bulky winter sweaters away for now.

Put clothes you only wear on special occasions, like an ugly Christmas sweater, on the highest shelf that is most difficult to access. Put your favorites and most-worn pieces, like work clothes, in easy accessible spots in your closet.

3. Organize your closet by category and color

The next step is to organize the clothes on your closet rack by category. For example: Sweaters, casual tops, work tops, dresses, pants, etc. To make things easy to find, you can also organize them by color within each category.

4. Organize your shoes

Place shoes on the floor or on a shoe rack. Make sure each shoe is with it’s match. Tuck laces into the shoe so they look clean and organized.

Place shoes together with each one pointing in the opposite direction. This will make them fit together better and save you space.

5. Save space if needed

If you’ve followed the steps above and your closet looks really packed full, use space saving hangers. You want your closet to be easy to quickly browse through so you can find the item you’re looking for in just a few seconds.

These space saving hangers will give you the extra space you need to shuffle through your options quickly.

6. Establish good cleaning habits

Now that you have gone through the steps to organize your closet and it looks amazing, you’ll need to do a little work to keep it that way. Establish a habit of always putting clothes away at the end of the day.

If you take out several items while your getting ready and leave a few out on the bed, do not give in to the temptation of creating that chair in your bedroom that holds a huge pile of clothes for weeks. We all know that chair.

Hang up clothes at the end of everyday, and put them back in their designated spot.

7. Turn hangers to the opposite direction after wearing

Once you wear something, put the clothes back in your closet, turning the hanger to the opposite direction. This will help you identify what clothes you’re wearing, and which you aren’t.

After a few months, evaluate the clothes you haven’t worn and get rid of anything that you aren’t loving anymore. By doing this periodically, you won’t need to do a big overhaul every year.

Those are the 7 simple steps to organize your closet and keeping it organized.
