Having the right morning routine will get you energized and organized for the day. Implementing a self care morning routine will also help you calm your mind and prepare for whatever is on your to-do list for that day.
Establishing a routine, even during times of stress and uncertainty is also important.
If you are feeling overwhelmed, experiencing anxiety, or feel like your normal daily routine is being turned upside down due to the current environment, then having a consistent routine can ease some of those feelings.
Follow these 8 steps for a self care morning routine.
1. Wake up to a gentle alarm
Set your alarm using a gentle sound. This will eliminate the harsh, jolting annoyance that a daily alarm can bring.
You can use a gentle sound or song you like to wake up to something soothing.
I recommend setting your alarm fifteen minutes earlier than you actually need to be out of bed so that you can wake up at your own pace and don’t feel stressed or rushed as soon as you open your eyes.
2. Drink some water
This is an essential part of a morning routine, but can often be overlooked. When you are rushing to get ready in the morning, hydration is not always the first thing on your mind.
However, drinking water first thing will put you on track to stay well-hydrated all day. It’s also been shown to make you feel more awake so you’ll be more ready to tackle your day.
Lastly, if the first two reasons don’t have you convinced to hydrate in the morning, it’s much better for your stomach to have some water in it before you hit it with coffee or any vitamins you might take.
I love this water bottle from Simple Modern because it keeps water cold all night, so if I put it next to my bed before going to sleep it’ll still taste great when I wake up.
It also has an easy to use straw so it’s super easy to hydrate both in the morning and then all throughout the day.
3. Make your bed
Making your bed only takes five minutes, but it can have a large impact on your mental health, making it a great habit to incorporate into a daily routine.
It gives you a sense of accomplishment right from the start of your day and will help you feel more organized and productive.
And since it doesn’t take very much time, making your bed isn’t a difficult habit to fit into your morning routine.
4. Meditate
Before thinking about your to-do list for the day, take some quiet time for yourself in the morning to calm your mind and find inner peace.
I like to do this outside on the porch to get some fresh air, so I recommend that if it’s an option for you.
Start small by meditating for just a couple of minutes each morning, and work your way up to a larger session.

5. Do some physical activity
Next, incorporate some physical activity into your morning to get your blood pumping.
Exercising in the morning will help you wake up, clear your mind, and increase your metabolism.
Even if you just take a walk around the block or do a few exercises at home, something is better than nothing!
Exercise has a large impact on your mood, so you will be starting your day off right.
I know I definitely notice an improvement to my mood when I exercise compared to days when I don’t do any physical activity.

6. Shower and get ready
After you exercise, get ready for the day.
Take a nice, hot shower. Incorporate a makeup routine that will make you feel beautiful. Choose clothes that will make you feel confident to tackle your day.
Give yourself enough time in the morning so that you don’t have to rush through getting ready and feel stressed.
7. Eat breakfast
Next, make a healthy breakfast to fuel your body for the rest of the day.

Eating a healthy breakfast sets the tone of the rest of your day and will help you eat healthier throughout. While it may be tempting to skip, especially if you are short on time, not eating may cause hunger spikes that lead you to make unhealthy choices later in the day.
You can also make coffee or tea at this time. It’s best to drink coffee after you get some food in your stomach to reduce irritation.
I like to use a Keurig because I am the only one in my household who drinks coffee, so I can make just enough for myself without wasting any. I also use a reusable K-cup to reduce waste from the disposable ones.
8. Make a to-do list
After you eat breakfast, get ready to start your day by making sure you have an organized plan and to-do list. Making a to-do list will help you be more productive and allow you to prioritize tasks as you need.
